BLUE WHALES

We are very fortunate to see Blue Whales off our coast during summer months. Blue Whales are the largest animal ever known to man and are currently endangered. These amazing animals feed on small crustaceans called krill and can consume upwards to 40 million krill a day! Blue Whales can average about 150,000-300,000 pounds and measure about 90-100 feet long.

GRAY WHALES

Gray Whale migration is December through April/May. Gray Whales travel from Alaska to the warm waters of Mexico to give birth and make their journey back to Alaska with their calf. The round trip of this migration is approximately 12,400 miles! Gray Whales can reach about 48 feet in length and weight upwards to 72,000 pounds.

KILLER WHALES (ORCAS)

The Killer Whale is also known as the Orca Whale and is actually part of the Dolphin family. Killer whales have no natural predators. Killer Whales hunt in groups like wolf packs and are sometimes referred to as the wolves of the sea. We are very fortunate to see these incredible animals off our coast.

FIN WHALES

The Fin Whale is the second largest animal behind the Blue Whale. Fin Whales can reach reported lengths of approximately 88 feet and weigh more than 150,000 pounds. The Fin Whale is the fastest whale and can swim at speeds up to 23 miles per hour.

BOTTLENOSE DOLPHINS

Bottlenose Dolphins are popular from television programs such as Flipper and are seen in Aquariums and theme parks. They can grow up to 13 feet and weigh up to 1,400 pounds.

HUMPBACK WHALES

Humpback Whales average about 39-52 feet in length and weigh upwards to 79,000 pounds. Humpback Whales are very acrobatic and known for breaching and slapping the water with its tail. They typically migrate up to 16,000 miles each year, feed only in the summer, and migrate to give birth in the winter.

COMMON DOLPHINS

Common Dolphins can reach lengths of about 8 feet and weigh as much as 290 pounds. Common Dolphins feed on squid and small schooling fish. Large pods of Common Dolphins are referred to as super and mega pods and can reach into the thousands.
